Krishna consciousness in the heart of Europe

Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and as such, he has an unlimited number of names given according to the activities He performs. In the form of Paramatma He enters the hearts of all living entities. In the same way, He kindly appeared in the heart of Europe – in the Czech Republic. He chose the capital of this country – Prague – which counts as an important cultural and historical center of Europe. As Sri Sri Nitai Navadvipacandra he dispells the darkness of ignorance, blessing thus everybody in the most wonderful way.

During the communism regime period due to endeavors and visits by several determined preachers from abroad, such as Bhaktivaibhava Swami, Devamrita Swami, Krishna Ksetra Prabhu and others, there had been already few local enthusiastic devotees. Their preaching was going on under the supervision of the State Security; therefore it wasn´t as effective and not so many people were approached. However, everything really began in 1990 as only three devotees in number started spreading the sankirtan movement of Lord Caitanya by distributing thousands of books with great enthusiasm. Srila Prabhupada said that everything will come by preaching and this was confirmed in this case also. In a few years, the three preachers expanded into more than forty devotees who, at present, are the residents of two houses made into a transcendental temple.

Unfortunately, devotees still don´t have their own temple, so the aim of getting a new temple becomes one of the main goals on which they are focusing. Therefore, they try hard to find a nice place for the Supreme Lord and His devotees which would attract still more people to Krishna consciousness and where everybody would feel like in Vaikuntha. In spite of these material deficiencies, there are various projects in working and the public gradually accepts Krishna consciousness movement as a part of society. Last year, ISKCON was officially registered as a religious organization in the Czech Republic as a result of a new law regarding religions. Thus, the Christian-Jewish tradition being taken aside, the Hare Krishna movement becomes a first registered religious organization in the Czech republic.
